The remarkable Citrus trifoliata (Japanese bitter orange, hardy orange, syn. Poncirus trifoliata) is turning yellow and revealing the green stems, large thorns and yellow fruit. In spring and early summer this shrub is covered with fragrant white flowers like orange-blossom. There is a smaller cultivar with twisted, contorted stems, Citrus trifoliata ‘Flying Dragon’, which makes an excellent hedge.
